My love of mythology, folklore and forgotten history is infused in the figures that I create. I am often inspired when watching people, and to capture the essence of the real I refer to anatomical illustrations, photography, and literature. What arises are the Storytellers: grounded in a timeless moment of reflection and solace.
There is splendor in everyday struggles and wonder in the visible and invisible worlds. The notion that the individual journey is universal yet unique connects the Storytellers from the past to the future.
Life is fleeting, ever changing and magnificent. The human form is a mirror and a marker of who we are and where we come from. It is dynamic and impulsive, yet poignant and introspective in its struggle to be. My work is a human narrative, built on myth, fable and folklore and sifted through my own senses.
All of the work in this series uses a combination of pyrography- the controlled application of heat to make burn marks, a propane torch, and fire to create these works on wood. After the ‘drawing’ is finished various waxes, inks and gold leaf are applied. The completed work is varnished with a high quality UVA/UVB protectant.
